ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE FIRST CYPRUS OLYMPIAD STEAME PBL

Under the auspices of the Minister of Education, Sport and Youth Dr Athina Michaelidou

In the framework of the 3rd STEAME Festival, the Cyprus Mathematical Society and the THALES Foundation, in collaboration with the European Federation of STEAME Teacher Facilitators Academies, are organizing the first Cyprus STEAME PBL Olympiad. Students of Public and Private Lower and Upper Secondary Schools (Gymnasiums and Lyceums), aged 14 - 17 years old (Grade 8 under Gymnasium to Grade 11 under Lyceum) are eligible to participate.

A total of 12 teams from 12 different schools, consisting of 4 students each, will be invited to participate in the first STEAME PBL Olympiad. In the selection of the 12 schools, an effort will be made to represent all the Districts of Cyprus equally, while, at the same time, a priority order will be given.

The teams gather in a place to be determined in Limassol, where they will be given instructions and will have the opportunity to resolve any questions they may have.

11.30

The project-type problem they need to solve is made available to the students so that they can study it and ask for any clarifications, if needed. The teams are then led to their workplace to continue.

Start of the competition part – The teams work to solve the project problem.

Light Lunch Offered during work

End of work – Project report submission and draw for the sequence of presentations with oral examination on the next day, Saturday, November 29, 2025.

The teams arrive at the Linopetra Lyceum in Limassol, for the presentation of their work in front of the Judges Committee (20 minutes of presentation and 10 minutes of oral examination: a total of 30 minutes for each presentation). The order of presentation is determined by a draw on the previous day. All teams must arrive 30 min before their time appointment.

 

What the teams are expected to deliver at the end of the first day:

  1. Project Title
  2. Short summary (100 - 300 words)
  3. Analysis/Methodology
  4. Use of digital tools, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. The way they have been used in their project work should be explained.
  5. Proposed solutions/results
  6. References/Bibliography

The format of the presentation (and the means that each group will use) is up to the students themselves.

The Evaluation Criteria include, but not limited to: 1) originality, 2) creativity, 3) cooperation, 4) persuasiveness of arguments and 5) understanding of the method and tools used.

The schools interested to participate with a group of students in the first Cyprus STEAME PBL Olympiad, can fill in the relevant electronic form available in the link HERE. Each school can register only one group.

Relevant instructions regarding what the teams will be allowed to have with them on the competition day will be provided after the selection of the teams that will participate.

Response of approval of participation: 14 November 2025
