CL 9/2020: The Inaugural International Day of Mathematics March 14

Dear colleagues,

As you know, the 40th General Conference of UNESCO approved the proclamation of March 14 as the
International Day of Mathematics (IDM), a project initiated and led by IMU.

Virtual launch of the IDM
The UNESCO international official launch planned for Friday, March 13, 2020 has been cancelled because of
the COVID-19 epidemic. For the same reason, the Next Einstein Forum 2020 (March 10-13, 2020) in Nairobi, Kenya,
that included the African official launch of the IDM, was postponed. As a consequence, a special
Live Global Launch webpage will accompany all events worldwide on March 14, starting 00:00 New Zealand time.
It will show the new collaborative video, Mathematics is Everywhere, created by the international IDM community.
Throughout the day, it will also post special announcements, videos, photos and reports from the celebrations
taking place in more than 100 different countries.

You are hereby invited to send these to info@idm314.org (preferably no more than 1-3 photos in high resolution).
Press releases produced for the launch in different languages will be accessible via the webpage

I am happy to report that we expect more than 1000 celebrations around the world in 2020. I wish you very successful
celebrations in your country. The IDM is there to grow in the coming years, and we hope to reach out to more people
and schools already in 2021.

Regards,

Helge Holden
