CL 5/2020: IMU Abacus Medal
Dear colleagues,
I refer to Circular Letter 9/2019 regarding the IMU Abacus Medal, and Resolution 7 of the 2018 General Assembly that charged the
IMU Executive Committee (EC) with the responsibility
“...to determine and set up statutes for a prize continuing and with the same purpose and scope as the Nevanlinna Prize but
with a new name and appropriate funding to be secured.”
I am happy to inform you that the EC decided to accept the joint bid from the University of Helsinki and the Simons Foundation for
the funding of the IMU Abacus Medal.
The newly designed gold medal as well as the statutes for the IMU Abacus Medal can be found on the website

We are very grateful to the University of Helsinki and the Simons Foundation for their generous offer.
The first IMU Abacus Medal will be awarded at the ICM 2022 in St Petersburg.
